With the above ideas in mind, consider the following question: If the people of a country vote on an irrevocable decision,should all votes be equal?After all, British young people, who overwhelmingly wanted to remain in the E.U., are the ones who will have to spend the majority of their adult lives dealing with the after-effects of the decision to leave, a decision made in large part by their elders, who, while presumably wiser than they, will (statistically speaking) not need to suffer for so long if that decision turns out to have been a bad one.

So, just as there is an age limit for voting, should some questions be restricted to a certain group? In a representative democracy, the principle of one person, one vote is sacrosanct. That being so, in your opinion, it is fair or is it the tyranny of a self-interested majority to implement decisions that will negatively affect one generation in perpetuity? Is there any way around this or must we accept that democracy is imperfect and that sometimes people, like it or not, will suffer because of political decisions?

The following may help you formulate an answer:

According to The Economist, because of Brexit the U.K. can expect its economy to shrink by 2.4%, even more if immigration is restricted.

Only 40% of British young people aged 18 to 24 bothered to vote in the referendum that, to the surprise of many, approved Brexit.

Last and perhaps most important, should the U.K. declare Brexit null and void, and petition to be reinstated in the E.U.?

RESOLUÇÃO:
Nessa questão, o candidato deveria posicionar-se em relação à eficácia da democracia. Seria melhor restringir certas votações apenas para os grupos mais afetados pela questão em si ou seria melhor manter os preceitos da democracia tradicional, em que a vontade da maioria prevalece, ainda que muitas pessoas sejam afetadas? Existe algum jeito de consertar esse problema da democracia? Por fim, deveria o Reino Unido pedir anulação do Brexit? Seguem-se abaixo alguns pontos que o candidato poderia usar na construção do seu texto dissertativo:

1) Para o candidato que acredita que existe um problema no atual modelo de democracia e que o voto deveria ser restrito apenas aos grupos que poderiam ser mais atingidos pelo resultado da votação, ele poderia citarThomas Jefferson na sua argumentação. Disse o presidente norte-americano que: “Cada geração... tem o direito de escolher para si a forma de governo que acredita ser a que melhor promove sua própria felicidade”. Tal fala se encaixa muito bem no controverso contexto do Brexit. A maioria dos jovens, de acordo com dados estatísticos, não foi a favor da saída da Grã-Bretanha da União Europeia; foram os mais velhos que escolheram tal opção. Mesmo assim, os que terão de lidar por mais tempo com as possíveis consequências negativas do Brexit são os jovens.

2) Ainda nessa mesma linha argumentativa, o candidato também poderia citar a frase de W. Somerset Maugham para enriquecer seu texto. Disse o escritor e dramaturgo britânico: “Desde os primórdios, os mais velhos têm imposto aos jovens que eles são mais sábios, e antes de os jovens perceberem quão sem sentido era isso, eles já estavam muito velhos”.

3) Outro ponto que pode ser explorado pelo candidato que defende o voto setorizado é o fato de que se prevê uma diminuição de 2,4% da economia britânica por causa do Brexit. Até que ponto, economicamente falando, é viável a saída da Grã-Bretanha da União Europeia? Uma redução da economia poderia levar a uma queda na oferta de empregos e os jovens, por terem de aguentar por mais tempo os efeitos desse recuo da economia, seriam os mais afetados.

4) O candidato também poderia optar pela manutenção do atual modelo democrático, em que a decisão da maioria prevalece. Nesse caso, ele poderia mencionar as democracias tradicionais que vêm embasando-se nesse modelo há séculos e que, apesar de alguns pontos negativos, têm sido bem-sucedidas, como, por exemplo, a democracia americana.

5) Ainda outro argumento que poderia ser utilizado em função do status quo da democracia é um dado que a proposta de redação trouxe: 40% dos jovens britânicos entre 18 e 24 anos se importaram em votar no referendo que aprovou o Brexit. O candidato poderia utilizar tal dado para montar uma linha argumentativa em que o jovem, comprovadamente, não deu atenção ao referendo e agora não tem direito de reclamar de suas consequências.

6) Por fim, seja qual for a linha argumentativa que o candidato escolha seguir, deve-se tomar muito cuidado para não fazer afirmações xenofóbicas, preconceituosas ou aquelas que firam os direitos dos seres humanos, pois isso pode incorrer na anulação da resposta.
