The world’s invisible children

About a billion people around the world lack proof of identity, according to data from the World Bank. And an estimated 49 per cent of children under 5 lack a birth certificate, according to Unicef. The low number of birth registrations in some countries depends on various factors, from living in rural areas to children being born at home. The impact on their lives is greater than can be imagined. Children without a proof of identity struggle to have a normal life and are exposed to a range of different hazards.

The GSMA (Global System for Mobile Communications Association) has been working on telling the stories that demonstrate how mobile technology can help to reduce inequalities around the world. The new film launched by the GSMA, “Invisible children”, aims to demonstrate the crucial role mobile technology has had in giving the children from 15 countries the possibility to have their rights to personal identity recognised and in opening endless opportunities for their future.
